Research into the treatment of combat eye trauma is a unique experience of Ukrainian ophthalmologists that is in demand internationally, says Oleh Zadorozhnyi, a senior researcher at the Odesa-based V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

“Everything related to the diagnosis and treatment, including surgical treatment, of combat eye trauma is promising and a priority. This is the unique experience of our department of post-traumatic eye pathology. Until now, there has been little such experience in the world, so the results of our specialists’ research on combat eye trauma are of great value,” he said in an interview with the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

He also noted that the areas most in demand internationally include the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric eye disorders, in particular retinoblastoma and retinopathy of prematurity, as well as research in ophthalmic oncology.

“Fundamental research that brings us closer to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of eye diseases opens up new possibilities for diagnosis and treatment,” he said.
