In 2025 the world is entering a phase of political change. Important elections will take place in various countries, and their results could significantly affect both geopolitics and the internal processes of states. Maksym Urakin, founder of the information and analytical center Experts Club, and Oleksandr Poznii, co-founder of the research company Active Group, analyzed the main political events of the year and their possible consequences for Ukraine in a new YouTube video.
After the scandalous annulment of the results of the presidential election in Romania in December 2024, a repeat vote is planned. The election produced unexpected results, and the campaign of the first-round winner was conducted exclusively through TikTok. This sparked debate around the world, since for the first time a social network played a key role in a political process. However, the country’s Constitutional Court annulled the election results because of detected Russian influence, and the new vote has been scheduled for May 2025.
“The situation in Romania is unprecedented, since the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the election. This could cause political turbulence that will affect the country’s foreign policy,” said Maksym Urakin, founder of the information and analytical center Experts Club.
For his part, Oleksandr Poznii stressed that this case proves that influence technologies are changing, and social networks such as TikTok can become a key tool for mobilizing voters.
“This is a dangerous signal for Ukraine as well, since we see political forces beginning to use this platform as a way of manipulating public opinion,” Poznii added.
On February 23, snap elections to the Bundestag will be held after the collapse of the coalition in 2024. The main contest will be between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), but the right-wing party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), which has anti-migration and pro-Russian rhetoric, may also play an important role.
“The struggle between the CDU and the SPD will be tense. If the AfD takes second or even first place, it could change Germany’s policy toward Ukraine. For now, the main parties are not ready to form a coalition with them, but their influence is growing,” believes Maksym Urakin.
Parliamentary elections in Moldova will also determine the country’s foreign policy course.
“Moldova faces a choice between the European path and a pro-Russian vector. This choice will significantly affect regional politics. The elections will decide whether the country continues its European course under the presidency of Maia Sandu, or whether the Socialists, represented by Ihor Dodon, will be able to regain power,” notes Oleksandr Pozniy.
He also stressed that Moldova is a parliamentary republic, and even if Sandu won the presidential election, this does not guarantee that her political force will retain a majority.
On May 18, Poles will elect a new president, since Andrzej Duda cannot run for a third time. Experts believe this is one of the most important elections for Ukraine, because Polish support is strategic. The tense confrontation between “Law and Justice” and the opposition will determine the future of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The Ukrainian issue will play an important role, but voters are focusing more on domestic problems, such as the situation of Polish farmers who are dissatisfied with Ukrainian grain imports.
“Candidates will be forced to maneuver between supporting Ukraine and protecting national interests.”, notes Oleksandr Pozniy.
Serbia is one of the few European countries that continues to balance between the EU and Russia. The president, Aleksandar Vučić, has twice hinted at the possibility of early elections in 2025, especially against the backdrop of protests and the escalation of the situation with Kosovo.
Elections will also be held in Canada and Argentina in October, which could change the foreign policy courses of these countries. Norway will vote on September 8, and Chile on November 16.
“The elections in Canada matter for Ukraine, since further aid will depend on them. It is also worth following developments in Norway, which supports European security,” sums up Maksym Urakin.
The year 2025 promises to be full of important political events that could change the international agenda. Ukraine must take into account the possible consequences of elections in countries that are strategic for it and prepare for new challenges on the world stage.
