Event for children and parents “Children's Health in Wartime: How to Protect and Improve It”

On November 16, 2024, the Institute for Reintegration, Rehabilitation and Professional Development of Veterans “Architecture of Resilience” of the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture held the event “Children's Health in Wartime: How to Protect and Improve It”. The speaker at the event was a specialist of the Institute, pediatric neurologist Denys Boichuk. The event took place as part of the support for veterans' families and was aimed at strengthening the mental and physical health of children in present-day conditions.

Since the start of the war, children have become one of the most vulnerable groups in society, because constant stress, changes of environment and a sense of danger significantly affect their mental and physical condition. That is why providing comprehensive support to children and their parents is extremely important, in order to help them overcome the challenges of the modern world.

As part of the event, parents had the opportunity to take part in a seminar where Denys Boichuk spoke about important aspects of children's health in times of crisis, how to recognize stress disorders in children, and which approaches can be useful for supporting their emotional state. In addition, the specialist gave advice on physical activity, sleep routine, nutrition and communication with children, especially in crisis situations.

While the adults were immersed in the important topics of the seminar, the children spent their time cheerfully and usefully with career guidance specialists from the Kyiv City Employment Center. Interesting games and exercises were organized for them, helping to discover the world of different professions, in particular to get acquainted with the professions of architect and builder. Career guidance testing was also held for students in grades 8–11, which allowed them to better understand their own interests and potential, which can later make it easier to choose a future profession. In addition, the children had the opportunity to learn more about the specialties offered by the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. The Department of Environmental Protection Technologies and Occupational Safety gave a tour of its laboratories – water, soil and air. Special attention was paid to the virtual reality (VR) laboratory (Department of Architectural Design of Civil Buildings and Structures, Faculty of Architecture); many thanks to the presentation organizers Yevhen Yanovytskyi and Yaroslav Masiuk for telling the story and achievements of students, graduates and their international experience – an indicator of achievement that impressed all participants👏.

This event was an important step in supporting veterans' families, giving them effective tools to preserve their children's health and giving the children an opportunity to broaden their horizons and learn about potential professional paths. Such initiatives not only help overcome the psychological consequences of war, but also strengthen society, contributing to the formation of a more resilient and conscious generation.

The Institute for Reintegration, Rehabilitation and Professional Development of Veterans “Architecture of Resilience” of KNUBA plans to continue organizing similar events, involving leading specialists and partners, in order to support veterans' families in this difficult time.
