Round table: “State Language Standard ‘Terminology of Barrier-Free Accessibility’: Implementation in the State, Education, Culture and Society”

The National Commission on State Language Standards is due to present terminology standards in five areas by the end of the year: cybersecurity, barrier-free accessibility, rehabilitation, the penitentiary system and state border security. And until December 17, a public discussion of the draft state language standard was held on the National Commission’s website. Proposals came from language specialists, lawyers, human rights experts and representatives of the public. The Presidential Commissioner for Barrier-Free Accessibility, Tetiana Lomakina, noted that the standard contains about 100 terms and also proposes removing from usage words that are discriminatory or stigmatizing, form negative stereotypes or devalue a person. It covers terms related to a barrier-free society, including legal, social, educational, psychological, medical and architectural aspects. After the document is finally agreed, it is planned to be translated into English as well. The event was attended by the deputy head of the Institute of Veterans “Architecture of Resilience,” Yevhen Komarov. He is a regular speaker at webinars on adapting public spaces to the requirements of inclusivity and, as a specialist, is therefore interested in discussing the terminology of barrier-free accessibility.
