According to analysts at EastFruit, as of the beginning of 2025, compared with the same period of 2024, prices for most types of vegetables and fruits on the Ukrainian market rose. However, there were also items for which prices fell. At the same time, the average rate of price growth for fruit and vegetable products differed only slightly from annual inflation, which indicates a stabilization of the fruit and vegetable market.
Among the leaders in price growth in 2024 were cabbage, carrots and apples. Cabbage became three times more expensive or more over the year, due to reduced production volumes and the low quality of the product. Wholesale prices for carrots rose almost 2.6-fold and reached 26 UAH/kg ($0.61) as of early January 2025. Apples rose in price by 79% on average and are now sold wholesale at 25-28 UAH/kg, which is also equivalent to about 60 US cents. Premium-quality apples are sold at significantly higher prices.
“Apple prices rose sharply in all European countries, due to significant crop losses caused by unfavorable climatic conditions. Another reason for the price growth is the high price of apple concentrate, which also keeps prices high for low-quality apples. Accordingly, the fresh apple market has lost its most affordable segment, which has allowed prices for medium- and high-quality apples to increase,” says Andrii Yarmak, FAO economist.
The situation with pears was similar to that of apples: they rose in price by 70% on average over the year on the Ukrainian market.
Mandarins are another item with high price growth. We examined the reasons in detail in this article. In Ukraine, prices for these fruits increased by as much as 58% over the year.
For other key items, the following price increases were recorded: sweet peppers and grapes – 20%, potatoes – 30%. At the same time, prices for onions and greenhouse tomatoes did not change over the year, while greenhouse cucumbers became cheaper by 5% on average. The most significant decline, 8%, was in wholesale banana prices.
